"Mushi" are monstrous anomalies that grant their hosts, known as "Mushi-bashira," superhuman abilities. In exchange, these powers bring them the fear and hatred of society, often leading to their extermination. The story begins when high school student Daisuke Kusuriya meets a girl named Uta Kyomoto on his first day at a new school. Uta is a timid, melancholic young girl who has escaped from GARDEN, a top-secret organization that houses Mushi-bashira. Moved by her plight, Daisuke decides to help her. Meanwhile, the Special Environmental Preservation Bureau (known as Tokukan), a government agency tasked with eradicating Mushi-bashira, dispatches assassins to hunt Uta down.
