Revolutionary Girl Utena

Utena Tenjou is a spirited girl who wears boys' uniforms. Rescued by a prince in her childhood, she harbored an aspiration to become a prince herself. After enrolling at Ohtori Academy, Utena faced criticism from the school administration for her unconventional behavior, yet simultaneously became the center of everyone's attention. It was there that she met Anthy Himemiya, a frail girl known as the "Rose Bride." Moved by sympathy for Anthy's plight and determined to protect her, Utena was drawn into a series of duels among the student council members over the "power to revolutionize the world," challenging the "end of the world." The original work for Revolutionary Girl Utena was created by the team Be-Papas, led by Kunihiko Ikuhara. The team included Yoji Enokido, Chiho Saito, Shinya Hasegawa, and Yuichiro Kurokawa. Some people mistakenly believe that the manga written by Chiho Saito is the original source material for Revolutionary Girl Utena; however, this is a misunderstanding. In fact, Saito, originally a shoujo manga artist, disagreed with Ikuhara regarding the themes of Revolutionary Girl Utena, a conflict reflected in the manga adaptation. Due to its subtle and profound meaning and unique worldview, the TV anime of Revolutionary Girl Utena is often cited alongside Neon Genesis Evangelion and Martian Successor Nadesico as one of the three classic works of otaku culture.
