Takayuki Narumi is a high school senior facing entrance exams, living an ordinary life day by day. He has always been close friends with his classmate Shinji Hirai and Mizuki Hayase, the captain of the swimming club. Later, he meets Haruka Suzumiya, who is Mizuki's best friend. One day, Takayuki is called to a hill on school grounds by Mizuki, but it is not Mizuki waiting for him there; it is Haruka. Haruka confesses her feelings to Takayuki. Because Mizuki had set them up, and not wanting to hurt Haruka, Takayuki accepts the confession. However, Mizuki, who also harbored feelings for Takayuki, becomes lost after learning that he and Haruka are dating. On a certain day during summer vacation, while Takayuki is rushing to meet Haruka for their date, he encounters Mizuki. She uses her birthday as an excuse to ask Takayuki to buy her a ring as a gift, and then the nightmare begins... When Takayuki arrives at the meeting spot, he sees an accident scene already being handled and a blood-stained ribbon. Haruka, who had waited for the late-arriving Takayuki, was involved in a traffic accident, sent to the hospital, fell into a coma, and never woke up. Three years later, Takayuki gave up pursuing university education and became a restaurant waiter, while Mizuki quit swimming and became an office lady; the two live together. One day, Takayuki receives news that Haruka has awakened, but her memories remain stuck in the past three years. To avoid affecting Haruka's recovery, Takayuki, Mizuki, and Haruka's family have no choice but to conceal the passage of time from her, and Takayuki must play the role of Haruka's boyfriend from three years ago. During visits to Haruka, although claiming it is out of a sense of responsibility, Takayuki becomes confused about his own feelings. Cracks appear in the relationship between Mizuki and Takayuki. Where will the steering wheel influencing the fate of these three ultimately turn?
