Eikichi Onizuka is a former biker gang member who decides to apply for a substitute teaching position in order to get close to high school girls. Vice Principal Uchiyama believes he is unfit to be a teacher and only wants to approach female students, so he refuses to hire him. Later, two students come to settle scores with Uchiyama. Uchiyama tells Onizuka that if he can subdue those "two scum," he will let him become a teacher. However, Onizuka is dissatisfied with Uchiyama's attitude toward students, so he delivers a lecture on his principles to the Chairman of the Board. The Chairman agrees that the school has many problems that require someone like Onizuka to solve. Through this series of coincidences, his dream comes true. As a teacher, he faces ostracism from both staff and students and is nearly fired on multiple occasions. Yet, each time he manages to turn the situation around using his unique teaching methods—sometimes responding to violence with violence, other times deliberately letting things slide. Ultimately, starting from the principle of "caring for students and putting them first," he tailors his education to each individual, winning over a group of troubled students and leaving the teachers who tried desperately to force him out speechless.
