When the television anime series was preparing to air its final episode, Episode 13, Kyoto Animation requested that the original staff and voice actors produce two special episodes titled "AIR in Summer": "Mountain Path" (Yamamichi ~mountain path~) and "Universe" (Ametsuchi ~universe~). Although the TV adaptation of AIR had already referenced the plot of the "Summer Arc," the actual story content was significantly cut compared to the game. Consequently, these two episodes expand upon the character stories from the "SUMMER Arc" originally covered in Episodes 9 and 10, starting directly from what would have been Episode 8. The narrative focuses on Ryuya as the central perspective, depicting the events that occur during his journey with Kanata and Misuzu's mother, Yukito, to find the Eight Hundred Nun. After undergoing more meticulous production, the special episodes were first broadcast on BS-i on August 28 and September 4, 2005.
