The TV anime adaptation of Shotaro Ishinomori's "The Skull Man," the work of the father of tokusatsu! Another work by Shotaro Ishinomori, renowned as the "father of tokusatsu," is being adapted into an anime: "The Skull Man." Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 1970, this manga concluded after just over 100 pages. The story features a masked hero who wears a skull mask and wanders between justice and evil, light and darkness, and humanity and non-humanity. Although created before Kamen Rider (1971), the work displays Ishinomori's unique personal charm, and its satire of hypocritical humanism deeply shocked readers. In his later years, Ishinomori longed to adapt this work into visual media himself; this TV anime can be seen as fulfilling that final wish. This TV anime version is based on an adult worldview, dispelling the notion that "Kamen Rider is only for children." The production retains the original's distinctive eerie atmosphere while significantly enhancing character designs and stage settings. Set in a fictional era and a fictional Japan, the story unfolds in a military city known as the "Shadow Capital," depicting a fierce battle between humans and other life forms. The true identity of the Skull Man will also be revealed at the end of the series. BONES, the studio behind anime such as Fullmetal Alchemist and Eureka Seven, is producing this series. Yutaka Izubuchi is handling series composition, scripts, and the Skull Man design; Jun Shibata is responsible for character designs and chief animation direction; Shiro Sagisu handles the music; and Takeshi Morita serves as the director.
