Lawrence, a traveling merchant who makes his living by selling small goods, returns to the village of Pasloe after the harvest festival is over and discovers that something seems to be in his cargo wagon. When Lawrence pushes aside the bundle of wheat, he finds a young girl with wolf ears and a wolf tail sleeping inside. The girl introduces herself as "Holo, the Wise Wolf who rules over the harvest." As she survives on wheat, she will die if the Pasloe wheat hanging around her neck is lost. Holo stubbornly clings to Lawrence, hoping he will take her back to her distant northern homeland. Thus begins a journey between the wolf girl and the merchant, "completely devoid of swords and magic"...
