Legend of the Galactic Heroes

"Legend of the Galactic Heroes" (OVA version) is adapted from the eponymous long-form space opera novel by Japanese author Yoshiki Tanaka. It premiered in 1988 and consists of four seasons totaling 110 episodes. The story is set approximately 1,600 years in the future, with a scope covering about one-fifth of the entire galaxy. At that time, two major powers existed in the universe: the autocratic "Galactic Empire," and the "Free Planets Alliance," established by republicans who had fled the Empire. The Empire viewed the Alliance as a "base for border traitors," while the Alliance regarded the Empire as an "evil, dark, autocratic force." They were incompatible, engaging in a war that lasted over two hundred years. Between the territories of the two nations lay abnormal gravity fields detrimental to cosmic navigation, leaving only two famous passages between them: the "Fessaher Corridor" and the "Iserlohn Corridor." The Iserlohn Corridor possessed a formidable military fortress that was nearly impossible to breach, while the Fessaher Corridor housed the "Fessaher Autonomous Region," a semi-independent state situated between the two great powers. Thus, the entire universe operated under a balance of power among the autocratic Goldenbaum Dynasty's Galactic Empire, the Free Planets Alliance which valued freedom, autonomy, self-respect, and self-discipline, and Fessaher, which survived through economy and intelligence. In this historical context, finally, a young hero emerged on each side: Reinhard von Lohengramm of the Empire, and Yang Wen-li of the Alliance. The wheels of history began to turn. The two dramatically changed the situation across the entire galaxy, and together with many outstanding soldiers who rose during their era, they engaged in a series of spectacular battles... The following plot details contain spoilers: After seizing political and military power, Reinhard defeated the forces of the high nobility within the Empire, completed many reforms anticipated by commoners, and utilized the incident involving the kidnapping of the Imperial Emperor to formally declare war on the Alliance. His first step was to seize Fessaher. The army bypassed the Iserlohn Corridor, which held strong enemies and powerful fortresses, and advanced toward the Alliance via Fessaher. Although the Alliance forces achieved tactical victories under Yang Wen-li's clever command, just as Yang was about to destroy Reinhard's flagship, the Free Planets Alliance was forced to announce its surrender, maintaining a humiliating regime under Imperial domination. Shortly after, due to the Alliance government's misguided attempt to curry favor with the Imperial High Commissioner by assassinating the already retired Yang Wen-li, a series of turmoil ensued. Yang successfully escaped with the rescue of his former subordinates, allied with the El-Fasil Autonomous Government, and recaptured the Iserlohn Fortress. Meanwhile, Reinhard officially marched to destroy the Alliance, then attacked the Iserlohn Fortress. The two sides fought a great battle in the Iserlohn Corridor, but hostilities ceased for peace talks when Reinhard fell ill. Unfortunately, Yang Wen-li was assassinated by the Earth Cult while en route to the peace negotiations. His wife, Frederica Greenhill, succeeded him in his political duties, and his adopted son, Julian Mintz, took over his military command, continuing Yang's unfinished work. Subsequently, the Imperial Grand Marshal and Governor-General of New Territories, Oskar von Reuenthal, was driven into rebellion against Reinhard. His close friend and fellow "Imperial Twin Pillars," Wolfgang Mittermeier, was ordered to lead troops to suppress the rebellion, resulting in Reuenthal's death. To unify the entire universe, Reinhard once again raised an army to attack the Iserlohn Corridor. After arduous fighting, Julian finally secured an opportunity to negotiate with Emperor Reinhard, trading the return of Iserlohn for the internal autonomy of the former Alliance capital star system, thereby preserving the spark of democracy. Reinhard also passed away shortly thereafter due to illness. "Legend of the Galactic Heroes" does not limit its perspective solely to depicting the legends of heroic figures represented by Reinhard and Yang Wen-li; it also poses a thought-provoking question to readers: Does a unique truth exist in the universe? Between "clean autocracy" and "corrupt democracy," which path should be taken? This gives the work a deeper meaning beyond the common theme of "good versus evil" found in typical fantasy works. In the torrent of history, the collision of various value systems constitutes the main melody of this epic.
