Yusaku Godai, a poor rōnin student, lives in the dilapidated apartment complex known as Maison Ikkoku while studying for his exams. The building is also home to the gossipy housewife Mrs. Ichinose, the cunning and sharp-tongued mysterious figure Yotsuya, and the bold and open-minded lounge singer Akemi. Their constant antics leave Yusaku exasperated. The arrival of Kyoko Otonashi, the young and beautiful new manager, brings sunshine into Yusaku's life. However, Yusaku's indecisive nature, Kyoko's lingering feelings for her late husband, along with sabotage from their romantic rivals and the other tenants, make their path to love full of twists and turns.
