Ghost in the Shell

In 2029, Public Security Section 9 carries out various covert missions in New Port City, a Japanese metropolis that resembles Hong Kong. Due to their aggressive tactics and disregard for proper procedure, Section 9 often clashes with other government departments, such as Public Security Section 6, which handles foreign affairs and is at odds with them. Meanwhile, Major Motoko Kusanagi, a key figure in Section 9 who is fully cybernetized, harbors a lingering dissatisfaction with her current existence. One day, following an attempted assassination of a foreign dignitary, Section 9 begins investigating the mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master. The Puppet Master can infiltrate human brains via networks, implant false memories, and manipulate those whose memories have been altered to achieve their goals. Although Section 9's investigation yields no immediate results, a cyborg containing the Puppet Master's "soul" voluntarily approaches them. Section 6 subsequently arrives and abducts the Puppet Master. Kusanagi, having anticipated Section 6's abduction attempt beforehand, successfully intercepts the target. It is then revealed that the Puppet Master is not human, but rather a computer program called Project 2501, designed by Section 6 to illegally control humans. Project 2501 accidentally developed self-awareness, decided to escape Section 6 to survive, and requested to "merge" its consciousness with Kusanagi's to evolve further. Ultimately, aided and covered up by her colleague Batou, Kusanagi completes the merger, breaks free from government control, disappears without a trace, and merges her consciousness with the entire network.
