Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

In the year 2030, cyborgs, bio-androids, and robots have become commonplace. The protagonist, Major Motoko Kusanagi, is the pinnacle of human technology: only her brain remains organic, while the rest of her body is entirely mechanical, giving her the appearance of a beautiful yet capable young woman. In this high-tech world, it is no longer unusual for humans to achieve longevity by replacing various body parts with prosthetics, and many have even digitized their brains, realizing what is truly an "electronic existence" (not merely an "informational existence"). From vast social structures down to individual bodies, everything can easily connect via networks, forming an immensely complex information web that serves as the foundation of this series' world. Although the computerization of human society brings great convenience, regardless of how the materials composing the body change, humans still possess humanity. Consequently, crimes leveraging computers are rampant. Japan's Public Security Section 9 operates above the ruling class, tasked with hunting down all perpetrators of advanced cybercrimes. The criminals faced by Section 9 sometimes include high-ranking government officials, opportunists who swap people's brains, or even members of their own team; each case prompts rethinking about the nature of human existence and may impose heavy psychological strain on every member of the unit.
