The story primarily follows Mao (also known as Maotian or Little Chef), a young chef from Sichuan Province, China, as he studies culinary arts, trains at the Yangquan Restaurant in Guangzhou, and earns the title of Supreme Chef (a fictional highest rank in the Chinese culinary world within the manga). The protagonist adheres to the belief that cooking brings happiness to people. He befriends many like-minded individuals passionate about cooking and embarks on an adventure battling the "Dark Cuisine Society" (Underground Cuisine World). The manga consists of 17 volumes, while the anime has 52 episodes. The anime's story remains unfinished because the "Legendary Cooking Utensils" have not yet been obtained, and the final battle with the Dark Cuisine Society has not occurred. The series concluded there because the anime caught up with the ongoing manga serialization.

其內容主要描寫中國四川省的年輕廚師劉昴星（マオ，外號阿昴，台灣譯為小當家）學習廚藝，到廣州陽泉酒家修行，獲得特級廚師（漫畫中虛構的中國料理界的最高地位）資格，因為主角堅持一個信念－－料理是為人們帶來幸福的。結交許多對於廚藝有志一同的朋友，及最後與「黑暗料理界」（裏料理界）對抗過程的冒險歷程。 漫畫（第1集～第17集完）、動畫有第1話～第52話，動畫的故事至此尚未完結，因為「傳說中的廚具」尚未取得，且尚沒有和黑暗料理界進行最後決戰，後續的劇情因動畫追上漫畫連載而就此打住。
