A Certain Scientific Railgun

The story is set in Academy City, a massive metropolis that occupies one-third of Tokyo and has a population of 2.3 million, eighty percent of whom are students. All students in Academy City undergo superpower development, acquiring abilities through methods such as drugs, hypnosis, and electrical stimulation. Espers are ranked from Level 0 to Level 5 based on the range and power of their abilities. The protagonist, Misaka Mikoto, is one of only seven Level 5 espers (the highest rank) in Academy City, placing third among them. She possesses the ability to manipulate electricity, standing at the pinnacle of this power, which earns her the title "Railgun." This work not only depicts the ordinary yet extraordinary daily life in Academy City through Mikoto's perspective but also narrates the city's secret, inhumane experiments, gradually clarifying the background and worldview shared with its parent series, *A Certain Magical Index*.
