Porco Rosso was an ace pilot in the Italian Air Force during World War I, but he was cursed and transformed into a pig. Despite his porcine appearance, Porco continued his old trade as a bounty hunter, specializing in combating aerial pirates who terrorized the Adriatic Sea. The "Red Pig" quickly gained a fearsome reputation, striking terror into the hearts of the bandits. To deal with Porco, the pirates hired the super-pilot Donald Curtis. During their duel, Curtis took advantage of a failure in Porco's engine to shoot him down. When Porco brought his plane to his old friend Piccolo for repairs, he met Piccolo's granddaughter, Fio. Fio helped Porco repair his aircraft, and together they once again soared through the blue skies to fight the aerial pirates.
Then, Curtis appeared; he fell in love with Fio at first sight. To compete for Fio's affection, Curtis challenged Porco to a duel. Thus, the two clashed once more in a bloody battle across the sky.
