Whisper of the Heart

The story follows the protagonist, middle school girl Shizuku Tsukishima, who loves reading. One day, she notices on the library cards of books she has borrowed that there is always someone who checked out the same book before her—Seiji Amasawa. Through subsequent encounters with Seiji himself and following his plump family cat, she arrives at Seiji's home on a hillside. This marks the beginning of a romantic relationship between Shizuku and Seiji, where they encourage each other to pursue their dreams. The narrative also subtly explores the reality of academic advancement versus realizing one's aspirations for middle school students—the metaphor of "raw stones" being beautiful but requiring polishing to become gems is central. Additionally, a scene where Shizuku plays music together with Seiji's family has captivated many viewers. There is another subplot involving Seiji's home: a statue of the Baron from the Cat Kingdom, whose eyes are inlaid with two gemstones. The light refracted by these gems at sunset fascinates Shizuku during her visit. The Baron statue also witnesses the poignant love story of Seiji's grandfather, an antique collector, and his former lover, inspiring Shizuku's novel-writing journey and emotional growth. The Baron and the plump cat later reappear as main characters in Studio Ghibli's 2002 film, *The Cat Returns*.
