A woman named Ai Suzuki, a leading Japanese actress, comes to Kogoro Mouri asking for help guarding her gemstone. She has received a warning that someone intends to steal her precious stone, "The Star of the Sapphire," and the sender is none other than Kaitou Kid. Kogoro asserts that Kid will attempt to steal the gem on the final day of the traditional stage play in which Ai is starring. The next day, Conan, Kogoro, Ran, and the Detective Boys head to Tokyo Shimbashi for the performance. Doubting Kogoro's deduction, Conan begins his own investigation into when Kid might appear. However, the person who shows up there is Shinichi Kudo! Has that man truly returned before Conan? Can Conan protect the gemstone? ...And then? Of course, that Shinichi is not real. But proving he is fake would require Conan to reveal his true identity. Seeming to understand this, Kid boldly attempts to get close to Ran and freely deduces that he will enter from the rooftop. Meanwhile, on the stage where Ai is performing, a scene depicting Empress Josephine unfolds. How will Kid, whose true identity has been exposed by Conan, manage to steal the blue gemstone? And what greater challenge awaits Conan and his friends?
